Eisriesenwelt Werfen – the largest ice cave in the world
An exciting experience. Werfen is only half an hour away by car. After a breezy ride in the gondola, you will walk along a panoramic path to the entrance of the cave. Equipped with pit lamps and magnesium light, the discovery of the icy sculptures can also begin. For the trip you should plan about 3 – 4 hours. Since the temperature in summer is usually below zero degrees, sturdy shoes and warm clothes are recommended.
Hermitage in Saalfelden
25 minutes from the Arthurhaus in a westerly direction, lies the fine town of Saalfelden. If you look north from Saalfelden towards the Steinernes Meer, you can make out Lichtenberg Castle in the lower third and the hermitage a little above, at the foot of a rock face. From the parking lot, you can reach the hermitage on foot in a good 20 minutes. Two half-caves belong to the hermitage, in one of them there is the “St. George’s Chapel”. The altarpiece depicts St. George thrusting a spear through the throat of a dragon – the symbol of the victory of good over evil! The hike to the hermit is an exciting, mystical experience.
Museum of local history Ritzen Castle – Saalfelden
Learn more about the traditions, customs and rites of our region. In addition to the largest collection of Alpine nativity scenes in Austria and a varied mineral show, the exhibition focuses on the topics of votive tablets, folk culture, trade, agriculture and associations. The picturesque Ritzensee invites you to take a leisurely walk afterwards. The hike to the hermit and the visit to the local history museum Ritzen Castle, can be combined very well.
Hallein Salt Mine
Located 35 minutes from Mühlbach, above the picturesque town of Hallein on the Dürnberg, is one of the oldest show mines in the world. In the Salt Worlds you will experience the extraction of the “white gold” up close. Dressed in white, you enter the show mine on a train. Over slippery slides it goes on. At the salt lake you glide on a raft, surrounded by a mystical cloud of sound.
